Project Interact (Action Demonstration) Contest Scheduled

Project Interact scheduled for Saturday, June 9

4-H members (both Explorers and regular 4-Hers) are encouraged to take part in Project Interact! Project Interact is a fantastic way to complete a 4-H project.

The contest will be Saturday, June 9 at Orscheln’s in Tell City.

To participate contestants need to register by noon Friday, June 8 by contacting the Extension office. Contestants need to arrive at 12:45 p.m. and the contest will begin at 1:00 p.m. Contestants need to bring their own materials, including a table if one is needed. They will be set up outside the store and will need to engage people as they walk by. Tell them you are wanting to teach them about your 4-H project. More information is available in the handbook starting on page 27. There will be a judge who will stop by and visit.

Explorers are encouraged to participate but will not be judged.

Members can select any 4-H project to do for Project Interact. Members who participate may be selected to go to state (but only state fair projects are allowed to be demonstrated at state.)

Quick note for Jr. Leaders

Tonight’s 4-H Jr. Leader meeting begins at 6:00 p.m., the approximate time a winter storm might be moving in. The meeting is still on but I would advise the following:

If the roads are already slick and hazardous do not risk your life by coming to the meeting. Or if you fear the roads will become slick, again…don’t risk your life.

If it is safe to come to the meeting, I just wanted to let you know we will keep an eye on the roads. If they look to be slick members can leave early. Parents, PLEASE BE PREPARED TO PICK YOUR CHILDREN EARLY. For Jr. Leaders who drive themselves, they must advise their parents BEFORE you leave the meeting if we dismiss early. This is just so parents will know how soon to expect you home.

Since we do not know exactly what will happen weather-wise tonight, I just want everyone to be safe. While the meeting is scheduled to end at 8:00 p.m., we might have to end early so families can return home before the roads get hazardous. PLEASE BE PREPARED.

Feel free to call the restaurant and ask for me (with the 4-H group) if you have any questions. I do have a cell but sometimes I don’t have a signal in Fiesta Grande.

BE SAFE!

Think Summer Fun in the Sun!

Perry County 4-H Families, There might be snow in the forecast for this weekend, but I’m thinking summer fun in the sun! That’s right…4-H Camp will be here before you know it!

4-H members in 9th-12th, this is just a reminder that 4-H Camp Counselor applications are due IN THE EXTENSION OFFICE by next Friday, February 17. All eligible members should have received a postcard in the mail. You may download an application by going to the 4-H Camp website: http://www.ag.purdue.edu/counties/perry/Pages/4-HCamp.aspx. The application lists the dates for planning meetings. Also, remember counselors that the 4-H Council pays for you to attend 4-H Camp if you are a counselor (since you will be working!)

For members who are in grades 3rd-8th, you may attend 4-H camp! The same website has an application. Postcards will soon be going out to families to let them know that we are accepting 4-H camp applications. The cost is only $50 per camper! That is because there were contributions made to the 4-H Council specifically to make 4-H camp more affordable!

As always, if you can’t print an application please contact our office and we would be happy to snail mail you one.

Don’t wait! Go ahead and book your spot now!

Enrollment Target Date is Almost Here!

Dear 4-H Families, It’s almost here! The 4-H enrollment target date! If members would like to exhibit at the 4-H County Fair, they must enroll by Feb. 1! That’s this WEDNESDAY! WOW!

Currently we have almost half of the total enrollments if we base it off of last year’s enrollment figures. It is not unusual for members to wait until the last minute, but we encourage you to take a moment and complete your enrollment at your soonest convenience.

Remember, we have an enrollment website that give options on how to enroll and answers many questions. If you enroll online, remember you must digitally “sign” several statements and you must pay (either pay online or in person to our Extension office.) If you enroll online, PLEASE REMEMBER YOUR PASSWORD and don’t go back in and create a new enrollment form. It is very confusing to our office. If you have any issues enrolling online, please call our office or email myself or our office manager Rhonda at rhauenst@purdue.edu .

Thanks and we can’t wait to see how many we will have join this year!

4-H Enrollment Has Looming Target Date for Those Who Wish to Exhibit at the County Fair

I just can't wait! No, I just can't wait to see how many of you will use the new online enrollment system! Remember, Perry County 4-H has open enrollment right now! Members who enroll by February 1 can exhibit at the 4-H County Fair.

So far we have only a handful of members who have enrolled. Don't wait until the last minute! Remember to enroll (either online or using paper.) We must have all proper signatures (remember that parents/guardians must sign AND members have to sign, too.) And we must have payments received in order for members to fully be enrolled.

Remember, you can enroll online. This link gives you the information on enrolling online. Or you can download a paper version and enroll.

Are you ready to join 4-H? It's open to all youth in grades kindergarten through 12th! We even have members from outside Perry County! Isn't that neat that they love Perry County's program so much they join us here!!!

Invite your friends, neighbors, EVERYONE! 4-H is for everybody!

Let's see how many 4-H members join this year! Let's really make it grow so we can keep making the best better!

Scholarships available

Louisville, Kentucky – – Farm Credit Services of Mid-America – a $17.5 billion agriculture lending cooperative serving farmers and rural America in Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana and Tennessee – is allocating more than $100,000 in scholarships to students studying agriculture and other business related majors during 2012.

In addition to offering scholarships through the 4-H and FFA and several universities across the association’s four-state territory, Farm Credit will be awarding 42 scholarships to FCS members or children of members who are attending college.  The values of the FCS scholarships are between $1,000 and $1,500 and are awarded based on academic record, leadership qualities, and community involvement.

“We offer scholarships to youth as a way to demonstrate our commitment to help prepare them for tomorrow’s world.  As agriculture continues to grow and evolve, we want to make sure that the next generation of rural community leaders are at the forefront of the industry, and grow with it,” said George Stebbins, chair of the Farm Credit Services of Mid-America board.

FCS Scholarships are available to customers, their dependents and spouses of the ag lending cooperative. The deadline to apply is February 29, 2012.  To apply, go online to www.e-farmcredit.com and click on Community, then Scholarships to download the application.  You may also call 1-800-444-3276 to talk the local office about obtaining an application.

If you are interested in applying for the university scholarships or the scholarships offered through the state offices of the 4-H and FFA, you can find contact information on www.e-farmcredit.com - click on Community, then Scholarships.  The deadlines for those scholarships are generally early spring, but vary based on location.
